Green county once had over 150 cheese factories and while that number has dwindled to less than 20, the county still boasts more cheese factories than any other county in Wisconsin (which is still America's dairyland) and Green County still produces some of the best and most unusual cheeses in the nation (if not the world). Local master cheese makers routinely bring home honors from virtually every major cheese competition in the world. As such, Green County is home to the National Historic Cheesemaking Center which houses a vast collections of artifacts and historical documents chronicling the rich history of cheese in this area. Cheese is so much a part of the culture in Green County that every two years, as many as 100,000 locals and traveling cheese enthusiasts gather in Monroe for the aptly-named Cheese Days festival.
The rich agricultural heritage of the Green County area is reflected in the landscape of the region which is dotted with numerous family farms and decorated in the pastoral beauty of rolling hills furrowed with grain and other crops.
