Welcome to
the Brodhead, Wisconsin home page on Green County Spotlight. The City of Brodhead is the second-largest
community in Green County with 3,180 people (as of the
Year 2000 Census).
The
Brodhead Depot Museum (top left corner of page) is just one of the many attractions in or near the city. The southern end of the 23-mile long
Sugar River State Trail is also located in Brodhead as is a splendid reproduction of the Clarence Covered Bridge-- just a short distance up the trail from downtown.
Home of the Half-way Tree -- It is claimed that the half-way tree (left) was paced off and identified by Native American runners as the half-way point between the western shore
of Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. It's really not quite the half-way point and there is also
some dispute as to whether this tree was ever actually identified by such an unofficial survey method but it's a good piece of local folklore
and the tree retains its title non-the-less.
For sports enthusiasts, the Brodhead area offers
Decatur Lake Golf Course (a picturesque 18-hole public golf course) and is home to the
Sugar River Raceway featuring go-kart racing on a half-mile paved track not far from the Sugar River.
For the adventurer in you, there are two campgrounds nestled along the
Sugar River
in close proximity to Brodhead:
Sweet Minnihaha Campground and
Crazy Horse Campground.
If you're looking for a little more refined vacationing accommodations, Brodhead offers a couple of relaxing Bed and Breakfast settings to
choose from (the
Go-inn Home Bed and Breakfast and
Sutherland House)
as well as a small hotel geared for biking enthusiasts (the
Earth Rider Cycling Boutique and Hotel).
Go-inn Home has four rooms, Sutherland House has four rooms and Earth Rider has 5 rooms so you'll want to try to book well in advance.
Brodhead's really big bash of the year takes place in August and is called Covered Bridge Days. The event features a variety of activities around Brodhead including a jazz-fest, sidewalk sales, sports tournaments, dancing, a classic car show, civil war reenactments, and lots more. Also during the summer months, you can attend free twilight concerts held either in the
Veterans Memorial Park (during good weather) or in the
Congressional UCC Church (when the weather is not so nice).
The
Brodhead Jaycees hold a couple of craft fairs (March and November) and the community holds an annual Autumn Fest on the last Saturday in September. You can find information about these (and many more) events in the Green County Area Community Calendar here on Green County Spotlight.
