Welcome to the Community of Monticello, Wisconsin

Home of the Ponies

Welcome to the Monticello, Wisconsin home page on Green County Spotlight. The Village of Monticello is a small community of 1,146 people (as of the Year 2000 Census) situated near the geographic center of Green County. Monticello has arguably some of the most beautiful park space available in a municipal setting in the Green County area. Be sure to check out Monticello's Homecoming Celebration held the second weekend in July, with races on the lake, live music,  a tasty pig roast, a great parade, mud volleyball, fireworks, rides, fried cheese and oh...so much more! Just like Monticello, it's the community event with a heart! Come see how we do it in Monticello Wisconsin -"The Heart of Green County".

A Scenic Recreation Destination

Monticello is a jumping off point for some really great recreational opportunities including two bike trails. The Sugar River State Trail and the Badger State Trail. These trails are constructed on abandoned railroad grades which make for an easy ride through some very scenic countryside. Other recreational offerings including, Monticello's Community Park, Montesian Gardens and the beautiful Lake Montesian You can stop here whenever you're traveling along Highway 69 and fill your water bottles from our natural artesian spring which feeds the lake. The lake offers a scenic rest stop for both human travelers and waterfowl many of which are often present at the lake. Lake Montesian is also stocked for fishing so bring a pole if your so inclined. Kayaks and canoes are welcome on the lake so pack a picnic and plan to spend the day in Monticello.

The area also offers camping, including a historic hostel right on the bike trail, or New Glarus Woods State Park just 5 miles up the Sugar River Bike Trail. If your looking for more comfortable digs, try the Monticello Extended Stay Rooming House, just a short walk to downtown Monticello. Of course, as long as you're in the area we recommend you sample some fine local cheese. Or take in the back nine at one of the fine local golf courses most within a 20 minute drive. The village of Monticello also has a big, beautiful, wet outdoor swimming pool and lighted baseball field along with a children's playground and a variety of picnic shelters.  Monticello is also home to the Green County Vietnam War Memorial.
